Flamingo

The Andy Warhol Diaries

Flamingo appears in the diary as a nightlife venue whose social life ranged from arranged parties to a celebrated reopening. The narrator’s visits place it within a circuit of clubs and late-night gatherings, while the reason he was admitted free on his return shows how an earlier appearance there continued to shape his access.

Parties and Club Stories

In a 1978 itinerary, the narrator recorded going to Flamingo at one o’clock for a party arranged by Victor. The stop followed a visit to Studio 54 for an animal benefit, placing Flamingo within a sequence of social engagements rather than as an isolated destination.

Flamingo also entered the diary through Truman Capote’s account of a visit with Liza Minnelli and Stevie Rubell. Capote described provocative entertainment at the club and recounted an exchange with its owner. The episode presents Flamingo as a venue whose attractions could become stories retold elsewhere, as well as a place to go out.

Reopening and Return

When Flamingo reopened in 1979, the narrator went there after dinner at Nippon and further stops at Cowboys and Rounds. He was admitted without charge because he had previously judged a male beauty contest at the club. The return thus linked the venue’s new opening to the narrator’s earlier participation in its events; the night continued until Thomas Ammann dropped him off at three in the morning.
